Herman Cain wasn't the only big winner last week; Florida Senate candidate Adam Hasner also won the CPAC Florida straw poll, with 34% of the vote in a four-way race.
This post is titled "2 + 2" because I've got two important points about this victory and two great video interviews to share with you:
1. Straw polls are often suspect because the results can sometimes be swayed by purchasing blocks of tickets. However, this win was completely legitimate. I confirmed with Adam Hasner and his top consultants that the campaign purchased exactly zero tickets. Not. A. Single. Ticket. Adam and his wife Jillian received free passes (as did the other Senate candidates and their spouses). I had a media pass and didn't get a vote. All of Hasner's other supporters either paid their own way, were there as volunteers, or received tickets from some other organization.
In contrast, George LeMieux had dozens of staffers in matching clothes running around everywhere. I was jokingly calling them "LeMinions," but LeMieux's third place finish seems to indicate that they were not very effective. (To be fair, I don't actually know if they received paid tickets until the next campaign finance reports come out, but there were an awful lot of those LeMinions all over the place.)
2. The voters had the opportunity to hear speeches from all four Senate candidates, and they could go meet them directly. All of the candidates had booths set up both the day of the Presidency 5 debate and the day of CPAC Florida. My point is that this straw poll was statistical evidence of what I already knew: when people get to meet Adam Hasner, they support him. The vast majority of Florida Republican voters are not paying much attention to the Senate race yet, but the ones that are, like Hasner. As this race picks up steam and voters continue to learn more about the candidates, expect Hasner's stock to continue to rise.
