Sunshine, Shuttles, and Stupidity

The smoke trail from Endeavour's final launch
I took a lovely trip this morning to Titusville to watch the final launch of Endeavour. It was a picture-perfect, beautiful sunny morning and the launch, by all reports, was flawless. While I wait for my video and photos to process, I just wanted to share a few thoughts I have with you all...

It breaks my heart, boggles my mind, and boils my blood that the White House cannot see the value of the space program. Beyond just the job losses here in Central Florida, we are needlessly sacrificing a national security advantage to China and Russia, and any other country that decides to step into the void we're creating. We've cancelled a successful shuttle program with nothing to take its place, voluntarily surrendering control of space to foreign countries and corporate interests that cannot be counted on to have our same interests at heart. Any company seeking to profit from space tourism is not going to make an investment in American national security the same way that NASA and our military do.

I have two major national security-related fears. First, any student of military theory knows that there is a strategic advantage in controlling the high ground, and what higher ground is there than space? Military technology continues to advance; we've had intercontinental ballistic nuclear missiles for decades, allowing us to attack any point on the globe with weapons located on our own soil. But how much of a deterrent will that nuclear arsenal be if we have yielded all ability to control our presence in the space above the flight path of those missiles? Any video-game playing child can see the problem.

Second, we are heavily dependent on satellite technology for communication. What happens if someone took out even 5 or 10% of our communication satellites? Beyond the inconvenience of losing ESPN, what happens if the New York Stock Exchange computers cannot communicate with the European markets, if telecommunications are cut off with part of Asia, if a major metropolitan area loses its internet connection? And of course it's easy to see the national security risks if we lost any part of our network of spy satellites that help us keep an eye on the many dangerous parts of the world.

The White House administration that so casually and callously allowed our shuttle program to die is the same one that senselessly placed a moratorium on drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico, while President Obama travelled to Brazil in March and told a group of business leaders there, "“We want to work with you. We want to help with technology and support to develop these oil reserves safely, and when you’re ready to start selling, we want to be one of your best customers."

President Obama's obsession with sacrificing America's ability to control her own destiny to foreign interests doesn't end there. The Air Force is currently considering bids to build a new type of "light attack and armed reconnaissance" ("LAAR") aircraft from two companies, Hawker Beechcraft and Embraer.

The Hawker Beechcraft AT-6
Hawker Beechcraft is based in Kansas. Embraer is based in Brazil.  If Hawker Beechcraft is awarded the contract, estimates are that over 1,400 U.S. jobs in 14 states will be created, whereas awarding the contract to Embraer creates only 50 American jobs. The two companies' designs are similarly priced, so there isn't any chance for significant defense budget savings in the manufacture, but the Hawker Beechcraft AT-6 design works with a far wider population of pilots, allowing  roughly 95% of both the male and female potential pilot population with weights as low as 103 pounds and as high as 245 pounds to safely fly the aircraft. Embraer is still complying with old Brazilian standards, which would prohibit 18% of military males and 81% of military females from safely ejecting from the aircraft in an emergency.

More importantly, we cannot risk granting a foreign country the ability to ground a large part of our Air Force. Brazil was publicly and vehemently criticizing our military action in Libya only hours after President Obama finished his March visit. What happens if protecting the interests of the United States necessitates action in one of the many socialist governments in Latin America, such as Cuba or Venezuela? Hugo Chavez is extremely hostile to American interests, and we cannot predict the chaos that may occur in Cuba when the Castro brothers finally pass away.

It is clear that our economic, military strategic, and national security interests are all best served by awarding this contract to Hawker Beechcraft. Hopefully the powers-that-be in our government can break their frightening habit and put America first this time.

What did YOU do this weekend?

It's easy to say you're a Republican, to claim you're a conservative, to promise to uphold the ideals of the tea party movement.

Yes, like most other things in life, talk is cheap. It's far easier to talk the talk than actually get out there and walk the walk.

That's why I'm impressed with how Adam Hasner spent his weekend. While the other Republican Senate candidates have been tying themselves in knots to trying to convince anyone who will listen that they are the "true conservative"  and "solid Republican" in the race, Adam Hasner just went out there and actually was a Republican.

Adam started on Friday at the Republican Party of Florida's Quarterly meeting at the Rosen Plaza in Orlando, where he met with leaders from the county party committees from around the state. I personally saw how many people were interested in what Adam had to say and were excited about his message.

RPOF Quarterly meeting in Orlando
Saturday, Adam drove to Jacksonville to attend the Florida Federation of Young Republicans' annual meeting, where he made a speech to the attendees. I wasn't able to go to the FFYR meeting, but from the comments I saw on Twitter, Adam was very warmly and enthusiastically received. You can watch his FFYR speech on YouTube. Here's a highlight:
While I may not be young enough anymore to be a Young Republican, during my time in Tallahassee while I was in law school, I actually served as the President of the Tallahassee Young Republicans...

The one thing I would tell you is that, more and more, speakers would come before us, at YRs or the YR state convention, they would always tell us, "You're the future of the Republican Party." Well, I have a message. And it is, this is your party today. You have more at stake in the future of this country. This is your fight, and you need to be engaged because you are going to make a difference in 2012 and beyond and we need your help and we need you involved today. You are not just the future of the Republican Party.

RT @RealMichaelW: @AdamHasner currently speaking to the @FFYRAnnual2011. Good things come out of the @tallyyrsSat May 14 17:56:07 via ÜberSocial

Adam had a similar message when he came to our Orange County Young Republicans meeting last week; that as YRs, we need not wait "our turn" to be leaders in the Republican party, we were more than just "the future," we should find ways to get involved and contribute now.

This is an important message that all Young Republican groups need to hear, but sadly, I have rarely heard anyone other than Adam Hasner say it. As YRs, we need to take a strong and active role in our party, run for office within our county executive committees and local and state governments, volunteer on planning committees for Lincoln Day dinners and big events like Presidency 5, and be confident in voicing our concerns and priorities to Republican candidates and elected officials.

Thank you @AdamHasner for your remarks to #ffyr annual convention. Hope to see you soon in Miami!Sat May 14 18:46:44 via Twitter for iPhone

After the FFYR meeting, Adam stayed in town the next day to help fellow Republican Mike Hogan in the Jacksonville Mayor's race. Sunday was the last day of early voting, and Adam and his wife Jillian joined other Hogan supporters in sign waving and phone banking.

There's not too many Senate candidates who would take time off from their own campaigns in a highly contested primary to campaign for a city mayor's race, and Hogan definitely appreciated Adam and Jillian's help:

many thanks! “@AdamHasner: Working the phones to get out the vote for @hoganformayor in #jaxmayor race. http://t.co/LTZY30j”Sun May 15 18:10:19 via Twitter for iPhone

It's no wonder that Adam Hasner is continuing to gain the support of grassroots conservatives around the state.

Here's more background on why I am on Team Hasner.

For more information about Adam Hasner:

Twitter: @AdamHasner

UPDATE: This is exactly what I'm talking about: while Adam and Jillian Hasner gave up personal and campaign time to stay in Jacksonville and campaign for Mike Hogan, how did Mike Haridopolos contribute?

By sending a tweet...and he didn't even write it, just retweeted what someone else wrote:

RT @RMFosterJr: So excited to see Jax elect @HoganForMayor tomorrow!Mon May 16 23:27:11 via TweetDeck

Wow. That's really gonna sway the results of tomorrow's election. Way to go.

In support of Chairman Bitner

This weekend was the Republican Party of Florida's Quarterly meeting, and several hundred Republican leaders from Florida's 67 counties gathered in Orlando to discuss plans for Presidency 5, next year's convention, and handle other important party business.

Sadly, there was a shadow on the otherwise joyful gathering, as anonymous cowards plotted to attack and undermine our Chairman, David Bitner.

Rick Scott grants clemency...to a fish

Yes, Rick Scott really did grant clemency to a fish.

Last week, the Governor went on a fishing trip to Destin, as part of an effort to raise awareness that the area has recovered from last year's oil spill. Fox News reporter Phil Keating accompanied Scott on the trip and interviewed the Governor.

Scott discussed issues like the legislative session that just ended, his support for keeping Florida's early presidential primary date, and of course support for the tourism and fishing industries in the Panhandle. Recent testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture of over 230 samples shows that Florida seafood is safe to eat, but the number of visitors is still significantly down since the oil spill.

The Governor caught a large amberjack fish, pictured below, decided to grant "clemency" to the fish and toss it back into the Gulf of Mexico.

A happy governor and an even happier fish
Here's the Fox News video from the trip:

Fox News Video | Gov. Rick Scott Goes Fishing

This week's trip to Destin follows a trip last month by the Governor and his Cabinet to Panama City. Scott was joined by Attorney General Pam Bondi, CFO Jeff Atwater, and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam in a friendly fishing competition, also meant to show how Florida's Gulf seafood was safe to eat. The Department of Agriculture has also recently launched a website called FishingCapital.com, with information about planning fishing trips in Florida, how to get a fishing license, helpful fishing tips, etc.

Personally, I'm glad to see our elected officials taking an active role in promoting our state. The reports I've seen show that many businesses that depend on tourism and fishing dollars are still suffering greatly, and the BP claims process is extremely complicated and not able to fully compensate businesses for the ongoing impact of the oil spill. Part of the challenge is educating people that the beaches are safe to visit and the fish is safe to eat, so anything our Governor and Cabinet do to use their positions to draw media attention is a good thing.

Granting clemency to a fish may sound a little silly, but it helped add interest to the story and draw media attention to an issue that should be important to all Floridians.

Morning Coffee Reading for May 11, 2011

Here's your morning coffee reading (and a video) for today:

Some great tips for getting more clicks and "Likes" on your Facebook page: (hat tip: Bettina Inclan)
Mashable | 10 Proven Strategies for Greater Likability on Facebook
Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) lays down the law for GOP candidate, stating unequivocally that he will not support any presidential hopeful who isn't tough on budget issues:
"I couldn't support a presidential candidate who did not say we have to have a balanced budget amendment pass before we support [raising the debt ceiling]," DeMint said. "I think we should go to the mat with Obama. I don't think there should be any compromise on that, and if Obama wants to be closing part of the government next fall because he's unwilling to balance the budget, I think we can win that argument."
(P.S. You know who else supports a balanced budget amendment? Adam Hasner, that's who. Oh. Yeah.)

Here's another Washington Examiner article about hearings held by Congressmen Cliff Stearns (R-FL) and Darrell Issa (R-CA) regarding the Obama Administration's lack of transparency:

Also, if you're not already following Congressman Issa on Twitter (@DarrellIssa), you really should. Besides posting lots of great updates about his work as "chief watchdog" for the House GOP, his profile picture (or "avi," in standard Twitter parlance) is just great:

Darrell Issa is watching you.

Looks like Donald Trump's flirtation with running for President may be coming to an end. Recent polls show his support taking a nose dive. Personally, my opinion is that the man can't even manage his hair competently, so I definitely don't want him having access to our nuclear codes!

Our wonderful Senator Marco Rubio is teaming up with Senators Pat Toomey, Jim DeMint, Mike Lee and others to offer a proposal that would balance the federal budget within ten years. Adam Hasner: Attack The Debt

One of the biggest reasons I'm supporting Adam Hasner (don't forget, you can come meet him tonight) is his strong and aggressive approach to our national debt:
Our mounting deficits and long term debt have become our country’s greatest national security threat. Raising the debt limit without making serious changes to how our country spends money would send the wrong message and create greater financial uncertainty. Washington should not raise the debt limit without a balanced budget amendment, spending caps tied to GDP, and serious reforms to Medicaid and Medicare to ensure these programs remain solvent without bankrupting our nation. This is an opportunity to get serious about spending reform that Republicans and Democrats must not squander.
Hasner recently launched a new website, AttackTheDebt.com, along with this YouTube video:

Happy Mother's Day

To all my readers who are mothers, I hope that you have a happy and wonderful Mother's Day today.

To my own lovely, sweet, smart and all-around-awesome Mom...

I talk and write for a living, but I  feel like I can never find the words to completely describe how much you mean to me, but I'll try.

God blessed me in so many ways when He decided that you and Dad would be my parents. Not a day goes by that I don't think about how lucky I am.

Thank you for all the support and love that you have always given to me. In your own quiet way, you're one of the strongest people I know and I've learned so much from your example. Now that I'm older, I treasure the friendship that we share.

Love always,
Sarah

Thanks, Charlie!

What an interesting week this has been!

I happened to catch the world premiere of Charlie Crist's first ad for Morgan & Morgan, and my YouTube video of the ad has, as of this morning, now been viewed over 40,000 times.

The video got a few laughs when I originally posted it here and sent out a few comments on Twitter, but the tipping point was when Ben Smith posted it at Politico at 8:53 a.m.

From Politico, it spread across the internet like the proverbial wildfire. (I have to say, the best headline goes to New York Magazine: "Look What Marco Rubio Did To Charlie Crist.") I had figured the ad would be funny to a few political people here in Florida, but I never expected that the entire blogosphere would be interested.

What originally struck me about the ad was that Crist seemed a little off his game. The energy and charm of the happy-go-lucky former "People's Governor" was missing, and all that was left was a sad Oompa Loompa in a suit. To compare, see the video of Crist's "Best of Both" ad from his failed Senate campaign.

The ad also lacks the usual high-quality production values of other Morgan & Morgan ads (I especially like the one where Ultima Morgan, John Morgan's wife, talks about the name of the firm). There is something very sad about Crist's performance here. It seems very clear that he just does not want to be there.

If you missed it, here's my original post, along with updates of some of the many, many places the video was linked this week:

Sunshine State Sarah | It was only a matter of time

Finally, last night, Sunshine State Sarah made its prime time debut. MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews featured my video:

First up...whiplash specialist! Just one year ago Charlie Crist was  of course Governor of Florida and a candidate for the U.S. Senate. Now Crist has turned from public service to public pitchman...I thought trial lawyers were all Democrats!
Well, Chris, there's a lot of us who think Charlie is a Democrat, so you may not be that far off. Thanks for playing the video. It was great to see my website up on the screen for all 37 of your viewers to see. ;)

Anyway, I've enjoyed my 12 seconds of internet fame. Thanks to everyone who helped pass this video on, and hello to my new readers. It's nice to have you.

UPDATE: Robert Stacy McCain, who blogs at The Other McCain and I had the pleasure of meeting at CPAC, posted this today:

Condi Rice puts the smack down on Lawrence O'Donnell

MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell made an attempt to interview former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice by tossing wildly inaccurate and illogical liberal talking points at her. Rice repeatedly smacks him down so many times, I'm surprised he wasn't bleeding from the ears by the end of the interview.

The carnage starts almost immediately, when Rice openly mocks O'Donnell for not understanding that September 11th was, well, kind of a big deal:
O'Donnell: [Bush is] clearly saying that September 11th is the reason he looked at Iraq differently and saw a threat there.
Rice: Yeah. Are you surprised by that?
O'Donnell: Yes.
Rice: After September 11th...

O'Donnell: Yes, because Iraq had nothing to do with September 11th.
Rice [grinning and shaking her head]: After September 11th, of course you look at threats differently...
O'Donnell keeps interrupting her to repeat the tired bit about "Iraq had nothing to do with September 11th!" and Rice stops him...
Lawrence, we can end this interview right now if you don’t want me to finish my point.
...and calmly gets back to the point that it's not that Iraq caused September 11th, but that Iraq was presenting its own threat, and golly gee, what we learned on September 11th is that we should take threats seriously.

The beat down continues from there. Enjoy:

Hat tip to Moe Lane, who humorously labeled his RedState post "MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell *had* 32 teeth." Newsbusters and The Daily Caller have some great commentary on this interview as well.

That was too easy. Next victim...uh...I mean interviewer!

Get a cup of coffee, and read...

I send out a lot of links to great articles on my twitter account, and don't always remember to post them here. I'm going to try and collect them from my tweets and post them in groups here as "morning coffee reading" every now and then.

Anyway, here's some for today. Hope you enjoy:

An excellent, well-reasoned, and thoroughly researched article by Dan McLaughlin on some of the ridiculously illogical arguments being tossed around by the left since the news broke about bin Laden becoming shark food:
RedState | Inconvenient Facts About The Takedown of Osama bin Laden
Another RedState article, this one by Melissa Clouthier, addressing liberal hypocrisy with her usual wickedly sharp wit:
RedState | Osama Bin Laden's Death: Proving Liberals Don't Really Mean Their Rhetoric
Last RedState article for now. As usual, Erick Erickson is saying what needs to be said. This time, he addresses the unnecessary panic attack that Republicans are having about our 2012 presidential candidates:
RedState | The Winter of Republican Discontent
Apparently, Obama took 16 hours to make a decision about the raid to take out Osama bin Laden (as Dodd Harris put it, "15 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds too long"):
The Daily Mail | Obama took SIXTEEN HOURS to make up his mind about Bin Laden mission
A touching story from the Sarasota schoolchildren who were with President Bush on the morning of September 11, 2001:
Time.com | The Interrupted Reading: The Kids with George Bush on 9/11
A tongue-in-cheek article about how very, very awesome Navy SEALs are:
Guns.com | Behind the Balaclava: Getting to know Seal Team Six
Senator Bill Nelson, Florida's sole remaining Democrat in a statewide office, really jammed his foot in his mouth on Monday with a stupid and offensive comment trying to tie Osama bin Laden to one of the Florida Legislature's election bills (yes, really). Here's @diggrbiii's take:
The Right Sphere | Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL): Idiot
OK, let me know if you like lists of links like this and I might keep doing it. I'm going to go get some coffee now. Have a great morning, y'all.

It was only a matter of time

Charlie Crist made headlines when he joined the Morgan and Morgan law firm after getting his tail handed to him by Marco Rubio in last year's Senate race.

Tonight, the World's Tallest Oompa-Loompa made his transition from the self-appointed "People's Governor" to "For The People," as this television ad began running:

It's nice that they helpfully point out that Ol' Charlie is actually an attorney.

The ad looks like he put on a jacket and wandered down the hallway right after finishing this infamous video:

Update: Here is Saint Petersblog's take on the ad.

Update #2: This post was linked on PolitiJax, the Florida Times-Union's political blog.

Update #3: My video is now linked on Politico.

Update #4: The video has now truly gone viral. (Hello new readers!) It is all over the internets, and the universal response seems to be ridicule, if not outright contempt. I've had to gently remind a few people to give me credit, but most (but not all...ahem!) are giving links back.

Anyway, here's some of what I've seen so far. Let me know if you find other links:

Heh. I wonder if they are rethinking the wisdom of that TV ad. It's free press for the firm, but wow, such a negative reaction can't be good.

I know a lot of excellent, ethical, hard-working personal injury attorneys (including several others at Morgan & Morgan), and I really question the judgment of anyone who thinks hiring the Oompa Loompa is a good idea.

Update #5: the video has now been viewed over 4,000 10,000 20,000 (!) times. I've added a title on the video with my website address now to capitalize on the free press, since not everyone was nice enough to give me credit for finding the ad. I seriously never thought this would catch on like this. I thought it would be funny for a few dozen of my politico friends in Florida, but never like this. I'm also shocked I was the first one to find it.

We Got Him

What a great day in American history.

We got him. Osama bin Laden is dead, after a raid on his secret compound where he was hiding in Pakistan.

Crowds spontaneously gathered to celebrate in front of the White House, in New York City at Times Square and Ground Zero, and at our military academies.

This picture, from the New York Times, is destined to become iconic:

Photo: Michael Appleton, New York Times
The New York Post and New York Daily News seem to have the best headlines this morning:

[Hat tips to Patrick Ruffini, Nathan Wurtzel, and Brian Stelter]

I am so proud of the excellent work by our intelligence agents and military in bringing this evil man to justice. His death does not erase the loss and pain of those lost on September 11th, 2001, but it does show that America fulfilled its commitment to the victims to see that justice be done.

I find it very telling that bin Laden preached to his followers about the decadence and sins of the West, while living a luxurious - especially by Pakistani standards - lifestyle, in a private mansion. The same man who bragged about killing innocent Americans died a coward's death, reportedly attempting to use a woman as a human shield. Bin Laden was a hypocritical coward, but now he's a dead hypocritical coward.

Another interesting aspect of this story is how it played out online.

The White House had announced that the President would have a press conference at 10:30 pm last night regarding a "national security issue," but did not release the topic. Speculation and rumors began flying immediately. What seems to be the first real "leak" of the story was posted on Twitter by Keith Urbahn, who had served as Donald Rumsfeld's chief of staff.

Once the news of bin Laden's death was on Twitter, it set off a flood of "anonymous sources" at the White House, Pentagon, and Congressional offices who confirmed the story.

Once Obama finally spoke an hour later at 11:30 pm, the entire nation was already celebrating.

The Wall Street Journal has a story about how an IT consultant named Sohaib Athar inadvertently live-tweeted the raid on bin Laden yesterday.

Uh oh, now I'm the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it.Mon May 02 04:41:46 via TweetDeck

Some of the internet's merry pranksters had a little fun with Google reviews, adding a location for "Osama bin Laden's Compound" to the map for Abbottabad, Pakistan...and giving the place a four-star review. [Hat tip: Matt Bramanti]

Here's some more of my favorite tweets from the night:
