Dear True Blood Writers and Producers...

Dear True Blood writers & producers,

I get it. You don't like Southerners, Texans, Christians, Republicans, gun owners, the military, sparkly dresses on anyone except gay men, or apparently just plain ol' decent people. And you made it darn clear with last night's episode that you don't know jack sh** about any of it.

So from this Southern, Christian, Republican, second amendment supporting, armed forces loving, don't-give-a-flying-you-know-what-if-someone's-gay, happy to live in Texas, proud to be an American, I'll wear sparkles if I want to, woman...

Ferris Bueller, You're a Jerk

Jerk.
There's liberal Hollywood bias, and then there's lunacy like this...

I was flipping through the channels late last night and happened to catch The Late Show with David Letterman, just as Letterman was introducing a segment where he has an actor pretend to be Mitt Romney, under the guise of simulating how an interview with Romney might go, if the Governor were to come on Letterman's show.

Grassroots vs. Michael Moore

I've seen a lot of different types of campaign fundraising strategies, but I have to say I'm really enjoying what the Sean Bielat campaign posted today: "Match Michael Moore." (Disclaimer: I work for the campaign...but you probably already knew that.)

Moore (along with a number of other liberal Hollywood elites) donated $2,500 to Joe Kennedy III. Team Bielat is asking grassroots supporters to match that by midnight tomorrow, and we're chatting about it on Twitter under the hashtag #MatchMichaelMoore.

Jon Lovitz, Tax Expert? [VIDEO]

In an appearance on Piers Morgan's CNN show last night, comedian Jon Lovitz managed to expose the fallacy of the Democrats' economic policies in less than ten minutes.

In a series of rapid-fire comments, he went through his frustrations with President Obama's class warfare rhetoric, explained why capital gains are taxed at a different rate, smacked down the idea that raising taxes on the rich would solve all our problems, refused to give in to Morgan's repeated attempts to blame Wall Street for the economy, and blew apart the idea of the "1%" versus the "99%" that the Occupy movement promotes.

Clear contrast in race for Massachusetts' 4th District

Sean Bielat, candidate (R, MA-4)
What a contrast...

Last Thursday, Republican Congressional candidate Sean Bielat kicked off his campaign for Massachusetts' Fourth Congressional District at a VFW Hall in Needham, a quaint little town of less than 30,000. Bielat asked his supporters to bring friends and make a "suggested donation" of $20.

Meanwhile, Bielat's Democratic opponent, Joe P. Kennedy III (grandson of Robert Kennedy), will be flying to California next week to raise money from some of those Democrats in Hollywood. Tickets start at $500 per person.

Harry Belafonte not a fan of Cain, but Castro's OK?

"You shall judge of a man by his foes as well as by his friends."
- Joseph Conrad, Lord Jim
This quote applies well to actor Harry Belafonte, who attacked presidential candidate Herman Cain as a "bad apple" and "false Negro" (are you kidding me?!) in a recent television appearance. Of course, Belafonte has no problem waxing poetic about Fidel Castro:

Staying awake for an interview though, seems to present more of a challenge.

Sean Penn: The Tea Party just wants to get the black man out of the White House

I'm not sure what is making Sean Penn so cranky. Did the Castro brothers forget to send him a birthday card? Well, since he couldn't hang out with his favorite murderous Cuban communists, he went on Piers Morgan's CNN show instead:

Morning Coffee Reading for August 23, 2011

Here's your morning coffee reading for today:
  • I don't know what's worse: that Vice President Joe Biden might really say all these awful things without thinking, or believing that he does actually mean them. In case you missed it, while visiting China, Biden commented that he "fully understands" and was "not second-guessing" China's one-child policy. Hey, Joe, you are aware that the one-child policy really means forced abortions and sterilizations and other human rights abuses, right? Right? Sigh...anyway...here's two good commentaries on this:
Michelle Malkin | Doug Powers| Joe Biden 'Fully Understands' China's 'Million of Children Left Behind' Policy
National Review | Kathryn Jean Lopez | Our VPOTUS at Work in China, Affirming Brutal One-Child Policy
  • Here's David Limbaugh displaying his customary ability to slice through liberal spin:

Andrew Breitbart is going to save the world

The full title of Andrew Breitbart's latest book is "Righteous Indignation: Excuse Me While I Save The World!

"Save the World?" I have to admit, when I saw that title, I rolled my eyes. I mean, I love Breitbart's websites and I cheered his role in the takedown of ACORN, but come on.

Andrew Breitbart says he's going to save the world...is he serious?

Well, after reading the book, I have to admit, yeah, he just might do it. As I turned page after page, the thought that kept popping in my head was a simple one: "Breitbart gets it, he really gets it."

Charlie Sheen: If "#winning" means making SNL look clever and eloquent, then you're doing it right!

Charlie Sheen's grand plan to ensure he's never taken seriously again is going extremely well. Earlier tonight, he gathered several of his friends pathetic enablers in a room and babbled away on an online video stream-of-consciousness for about 50 minutes.

If you missed it and you don't have any drying paint or growing grass you can watch, here you go:

Video streaming by Ustream

One of my new blogger friends from CPAC, Robert Stacy McCain, has had some excellent commentary on the whole Sheentastic fiasco this past week (see here and here), pointed out that tonight's performance "might be worth a thesis" for an abnormal psychology grad student. Oh yeah, he also quoted one of my tweets:

The Other McCain | 'Sheen's Korner': Not Winning
Brutal reviews for Charlie Sheen’s Saturday night Webcast. Chris Nashawaty called it “a sloppy, self-indulgent bit of cringe theater” featuring “a posse of chuckleheads and enablers.”

About 115,000 people tuned in to watch the godawful disaster, according to USA Today. One of the viewers, Michael van Poppel said, “Wish I could get my 50 minutes back.” Another viewer, Sarah Rumpf, said: “I don’t have the expertise to diagnose Sheen as bipolar but somethin ain’t right with that boy.”

...Yeah, [CBS and Warners Brothers] got their money’s worth out of Charlie and he gave them an easy out at just the time when they needed an easy out.
OK, so I'm not going to claim that was insightful social commentary. But I will say this, if anyone ever applies for a job with me and I see a "WINNING" wrist tattoo like Sheen shows off in this video, there is no way in H-E-double-hockey-sticks I'm hiring that person.

Not sure what Sheen's next career move will be. I'm thinking the best role for him to tackle next is probably the egg in an update of this famous anti-drug PSA from the 1980's:

Final note: anyone else starting to worry about the increasing parallels between America today and the final years of the Roman Empire? Unsustainable debt levels, decaying moral society...and while the Romans had "panem et circenses," we have American Idol and Charlie Sheen. Sigh...

Atlas Shrugged Movie! OMG OMG OMG

One of my favorite experiences of CPAC was attending the "BlogBash" on Thursday night and seeing the world premiere of the trailer for the new Atlas Shrugged movie.
Official movie poster. The movie premieres on April 15th, an appropriate date!
I've loved Ayn Rand's book for a long time, and often said that it should be required reading for elected officials. (Apparently FreedomWorks agrees with me, but Congressman Keith Ellison does not.) It has puzzled me that no one had adapted this great book to film before now, but I can see how it might be challenging, especially today.

In 1949, Hollywood managed to get Ayn Rand right, with the film version of The Fountainhead. However, Rand herself wrote the screenplay, King Vidor was the director, and Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal excelled in the starring roles. I highly recommend adding it to your Netflix queue or catching it the next time it's shown on Turner Classic Movies.

Atlas Shrugged is admittedly a denser and more complicated book than The Fountainhead.  It's Rand's longest book and the last one she published, with, let's face it, a theme that is a bit more complicated than the standard "boy meets girl" schlock that Hollywood is accustomed to producing now. Without Rand to guide the screenwriting and production, I honestly did not have very high expectations for this new movie.

Well, my pessimism was misplaced. The people responsible for bringing this film to the big screen have created a wonderful, amazing, and powerful work. This is a top-quality, lush, visually-stunning production. Judge for yourself, and view the trailer here:

We were also shown a few selected scenes from the movie. The actors appear very well suited for their roles, even the minor characters...I was a huge fan of the TV show Friends and the casting of Christina Pickles (she played Ross and Rachel's mother) as Mother Rearden, was spot-on. I have to admit getting slight chills upon hearing certain lines brought to life ("Who is John Galt?") and seeing Dagny Taggart wearing a bracelet of Rearden metal.

The movie is currently planned to be a trilogy. Part 1 premieres on April 15th, 2011.
